Fashionista's Market and Deuces Hawaii Fashion Show...

What a whirlwind of fabulous this weekend.. let's start with this past Thursday night.. Pearl Ultralounge transformed into All Dolled Up, which is geared toward girls to come out and try a new salon and get their hair, makeup, eyebrows waxed, massages, etc. all free and for a night of fun right on the dance floor! A friend of mine, Alyssa Fung, owns the fantastic Fashionista's Market; she had a fashion show to present some new finds from her latest buying trip to LA, so me and a bunch of my fabulous friends were models for the show.. She stocks her downtown Honolulu store with the latest designs from Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, Romeo and Juliet, Collective Concepts, and many others that make me way happy to even think about. She showcased chunky jewelry, lacey tights, and lots of bows which made me want every outfit the models wore..

Backstage shots..

Marsha Nadalin Salon and Spa did our hair and makeup.. let's just say that I couldn't have been happier they were going for the Brigitte Bardot (Patton hehe!) big Texas sized hair..

Shoe company, Deuces Hawaii supplied the footwear for the evening.. can I please have one pair of each??

On stage pose!*

We wrapped up the show with some post pictures..

In case you were wondering what our fierce faces looked like.. look no further..

Crafty Sunday...

Over the weekend I spotted this dilapidated chair outside my building where people typically throw away their bulk items. The chair caught my eye with its vintage curves and white paint job. I debated picking it up (I had never actually picked up a piece of furniture off the curb, but here in Hawaii it's totally normal - at least that's what I kept telling myself).. I left it at first and put it in the back of my mind that it was probably more work than I wanted to put into it... I went out later that night and upon returning saw the chair was still there.. at this point it was dark, nobody was really outside and got the nerve to grab it real quick.. As I'm picking it up, someone from my building starts walking towards the elevator.. Now I have this chair on my arm that could quite possibly belonged to this neighbor.. We share the awkward elevator ride and he turns to me and says "there was a cool desk out there too".. my response, "that's ok, I just liked this vintage chair, I'm going to refurbish it and make it look cool".. End convo.. Yup, after trying to sneakily grab the chair, still was caught red-handed. Oh well. Then came Sunday which turned into my crafty little day..

Before I actually thought about documenting the process, I had already cleaned it up a bit.. I removed the top cover seat layer that resembled some sort of sun drenched tropical pattern (you could tell it had been outside for awhile), leaving a green embroidered fabric underneath which actually wasn't too bad. I wiped it clean with some 409 and hammered the top back rest into place (it was coming apart from the chair) then glued together this huge crack on the seat that went down the leg of the chair. I left it for a few hours to adhere together.. that's when the documenting started:

Armed with materials I had purchased from Walmart and Ben Franklin (craft store) were one yard of pretty white slightly textured fabric, a staple gun, staples, a handheld sand paper cube, white paint, and a matte finishing coat. Also note I had never refurbished anything before..

I removed the seat with a hammer and sprayed down the green seat cover with cleaning supplies and put it aside to dry.. I used my sandpaper all over in hopes the paint would stick to it better and clean it up a bit more.. I then began the painting process.. It didn't have to be perfect because I wanted it to have this old fashioned vintage feel where it looked "lived in" but modern at the same time. I put two fresh coats followed by the matte finishing topper (I didn't want glossy because I felt like that would take away from the rustic appearance..)

I let it dry while I worked on the seat cover. I loaded the staple gun and placed the layered fabric perfectly square around the seat base and started folding it while stapling.. It was quite fun actually and I probably got carried away with the number of staples I actually used, but at least that fabric isn't going anywhere!

So this is where I didn't completely finish the job.. since I layered the fabric so much (I didn't cut any of the yardage), it was super thick, which meant two things, it was going to be super comfy to sit on, but that I somehow had to fit it back into the chair. I removed the old nails that were screwed into the seat to the chair because they were rusty and I didn't want to break the bottom of the seat. SOOOOO, I hammered the seat back into place on the corners which worked out that because it was so thick, it wasn't going to move out of place.. I also didn't really intend on people sitting in the chair unless it was necessary.. But I completed this look by placing it with my antlers I purchased off Etsy.. I think I just pulled off my first refurbished piece of furniture!!

Hmmmmmm, what new piece can I find now to restore?!

Delicious Cupcakes...

I have some major issues and pickiness when it comes to cupcakes.. A cupcake snob if you will.. I don't like the generic ones you buy at the grocery store (they taste spongy and I don't like sponge cake), nor do I like ones that are too fat, for some reason I feel like it loses its flavor and I have yet to eat a gigantic cupcake and actually like it.. I don't like sprinkles (they have no flavor and anything that gets in the way of how moist a cupcake should taste is banned from my palette). I'll admit I've tried a few cupcakes around town here and there and done the taste tests... By far, hands down is Hokulani Bake Shop. Now Cupcake Couture came in a close second, but when sampled side by side, something in Hokulani's recipe stands out and is consistent every single time I get my teeth on one. You can test for yourself and obviously all taste buds are different, but I must say.. Hokulani has my affection when it comes to the little cakes.. Red Velvet is what I'm talking about...

When you pick up your tasty goodness, you get this cute little reusable tote..

The surprise is in the box.. they smell amazing!!

The Throwdowns!!

A few of my friends and I got to check out The Throwdowns perform at Pipeline Cafe for their CD release party this past Friday night. I had heard of them before but never checked out their music. I did a little research and found out they're from Maui but the lead singer, Erin Smith, is from Canada.. I think that would explain my new found love of this girls voice.. She's a mix of Gwen Stefani and The Gossip but with this crazy mix of Hawaii in the music that makes you sway from side to side (you know the bounce I'm talking about). Hipster music mixed with Hawaiian sounds.. I never would have thought it would make sense, but The Throwdowns definitely make it jam! Recently signed to the ADA/Warner label, they were selling their 8-song CD, one of which they gave to me (thank goodness), titled "Don't Slow Down" hasn't left my CD player since I got it. I highly recommend the purchase if you're wanting to re-invent your music collection. And now, I leave you with a few shots from the night from my trusty little camera.

And the obligatory self portrait friend shot.. I'm really good at these...

Guess by Marciano with Pure Beauty Event...

Last Thursday Guess by Marciano in Waikiki held an event to feature some of their new fashionable lines coming out.. The dominated colors were yellow, peach, and white, all just in time for the summer months.. Pupu's (appetizers for you mainlanders), lychee martini's, wine, and chocolate covered strawberries were served throughout the night.. A night filled with fashion AND my besties.. What more could a girl ask for? OH and we were filming a little segment for our new TV show called Hawaii Hilights (more to come on that later) where I'm one of three hosts. Talk about multi-tasking but at ridiculous amounts of super fun!

Here are some of the snapshots throughout the event (I of course had to wear my Marciano dress for the night):

Mixed in with this night of fashion was host Jessica Hoffman, a good friend of mine (center), who is founder of Pure Beauty. An organization that is about empowering single women to live a life of vision, to embrace their dreams, to realize their value, and to pursue the beautiful path of purity.

Action shot! Me with Nicole (also a host on Hawaii Hilights), and Sam, one of our camera guys in the background..

Some of my favorite models wore different outfits throughout the night.. talk about pretty eye candy! The lovely Deanna Elerick in a black lace ensemble I'm dying over...

...love nights of fashion..

Kyler Kwock Photo Sesh...

A couple weeks ago I did a photo sesh with Hawaii resident Kyler Kwock.. After months of gathering photos and inspiration for a potential, yet unplanned, photo shoot, Kyler asked if I wanted to do a little session to freshen up our portfolios.. I happily agreed, sent off my photos for inspiration for the shoot, and he suggested downtown Honolulu for the location... Anything with brick walls or old windows to get a vintage/romantic feel... After scoping out the area for awhile and finding random backgrounds here and there, I think we found some great spots!! What a talented photographer.. he did wonders with lighting and camera angles... I think we accomplished our mission, all in about an hour and a half!!

The dress I purchased from Modcloth. I haven't even had the opportunity to wear it to an event.. figured a photoshoot would be the perfect debut... The accessories are from Forever 21, my absolute fav for jewelry (except for the single pearl ring.. that's real).. Lace detail.. heart it..

We found a cool graffiti wall so I gave a quick pose for fun..

This was our secret alley that we stumbled upon.. it was PERFECT!! My dress is this great mix of tan and light brown with a slight sheen to it.. paired up with my chunky necklace, gave a nice soft antique look I was going for (all from Forever 21.. surprise!!). Ruffles galore..

Kyler is well known for his wedding photography and commercial prints.. be sure and look him up for any jobs you may need!!

Neiman Marcus Junior League Charity Fashion Show..

About 20 models took part in the Neiman Marcus fashion show at the Junior League of Honolulu Charity Event this past Saturday. Held at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki, the events proceeds help the League fund projects that benefit our community.

Nothing like early call times to shock your body on the weekend, wake up those tired eyes, and strut all you've got on the runway. Rehearsals were from 8-9am, 9-12pm we were in hair and makeup. 12:30pm showtime! The event titled "Sacs in the City" featured several donations from Loco Boutique, Coach, Marc Jacobs, Prada, and other designers. I was like a kid in a candy store with all those purses laying around; I wanted to make bids myself! Here are a few shots of our hair and makeup. Makeup was done lightly for a fresh look (Thanks Kate Schuette for letting me take a snapshot of your makeup! What a cute redhead!).. Hair inspired by Nicole Ritchie with a part down the middle and low braids in the back (I liked how my peekaboo blonde bits stuck out).

We had 3 changes each.. Something about seeing those racks full of pretty clothing makes you giddy inside..

I was dying over the jeggings (Joe's Jeans) I wore for my first outfit.. mixed with that heavy studded jacket (Current/Elliott). It's like they reached into my brain and knew my taste...

Outfit number 2 was amazing! I wanted to take that Philip Lim jacket and keep it myself.. Retails for $995 and worth every penny. The gold sequins sparkled and was really comfortable to wear... Did.. Not.. Want.. To.. Take.. It.. Off..

The third outfit was the craziest one.. I think the Marc Jacobs t-shirt threw me off (sketchy Miss Marc label), but when paired with that jacket (St. John) and funky skirt, it kind of flowed together in a sophisticated but I like to take risks kind of way..

We did our finale walk as a group to Lady Gaga's Just Dance.. Never get tired of that song for the runway.. Here's a shot we took right after the show.. love these girls.. Models in Hawaii are one of the most amazing to work with.. Bright, educated, good-hearted girls..

Bruno Mars Live in the Road Runner Music Hall...

So I'm lucky.. let me rephrase that, extremely uberly, beyond words lucky, to be part of the Road Runner Music Hall audience that features national musical acts when they come to Hawaii. They are kind enough to give me a lifetime spot in the room when these amazing artists do their acoustic sets.. although, many times it's a full on concert with drums, bass, guitar, mics, and a trumpet or harmonica depending on the band. The sound in there is nothing short of pure awesomeness.. AND the opportunity to chat a few seconds and snap a pic or two of the artist performing. This past Friday, Bruno Mars who currently has the number 1 song on the Billboard charts for "Nothin' On You" with B.O.B graced us with this soulful, smoothe, clear voice that has a little Michael Jackson inspired twist. He also sang "Billionaire" which he collaborated with Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes. Bruno is originally from Hawaii and used to do shows where he was Elvis Presley at a very young age, so naturally, the audience requested an Elvis song, and out came "You Ain't Nothing But a Hound Dog"... Talk about a real treat from this rising star!!

You can check out live streams and shows that have been played in the RRMH at www.thehall.tv (yup, that's my face in the window) and make sure to sign up to win a chance to be a part of the audience!! Usually about 50 people share the intimate venue, so you don't want to miss out!!

My friend Heidi and I snapped a pic with Bruno post show.. Our heels made us tower over him..

Later that night we caught a few songs at Level 4 for the actual show..
